Study Program in Detail
The program can be started in the winter semester as well as in the summer semester. The language of instruction is English. The standard length of study is 4 semesters (120 ECTS credits).
Structure of the study program
- In the 1st and 2nd semesters, modules with a total of 60 ECTS credits must be chosen.
- The one-year Master's project takes place in the 3rd and 4th semesters. It consists of the following parts:
- Research Projekt in Physics, Phase I (15 ECTS credits)
- Research Projekt in Physics, Phase II (15 ECTS credits)
- Master's Thesis (30 ECTS credits, has to be registered before you start)

The following rules apply to the selection of modules in the 1st and 2nd semesters:
Core Modules (18 ECTS credits):
- At least one of the following two modules must be selected: Advanced Solid State Physics (winter semester) and/or Advanced Particle Physics (summer semester), each worth 9 ECTS credits.
- At least one of the following two modules must be selected: Advanced Quantum Mechanics (winter semester) and/or Advanced Statistical Physics (summer semester), each worth 9 ECTS credits.
Seminar: At least one seminar worth 3 ECTS credits must be chosen.
Key qualifications / modern foreign languages: Exactly one module from the area of key qualifications or modern foreign languages worth 3 ECTS credits must be chosen.
Additional elective modules worth 36 ECTS credits: These can be taken as follows:
- Elective lectures (with exercises) worth up to 36 ECTS credits: If more than two modules are taken in the core module area, the additional modules can be included here.
- Up to three additional seminars (maximum 9 ECTS credits) can be included. The number of credits to be earned in the elective lectures (with exercises) is reduced accordingly.
- Lab courses can be included for a maximum of 12 ECTS credits. The number of credits to be earned in the elective lectures (with exercises) is reduced accordingly.
Example of how to take the additional elective modules: Two seminars (totalling 6 ECTS credits) and a lab course worth 9 ECTS credits are taken. In order to achieve a total of 36 ECTS credits, additional elective lectures (with exercises) worth 21 ECTS credits must be selected.
Within the framework of the elective courses, one of the following specializations can be chosen. Please note that the study of a specialization is optional.

In the 1st and 2nd semesters, students take compulsory courses in advanced physics and elective courses from the various research areas of the faculty.
The one-year Master's project (practical phases I+II and Master's thesis) takes place in the 3rd and 4th semester (has to be registered at the examination office before you start)
Compulsory courses (24 ECTS points)
- Advanced particle physics (summer semester) or advanced solid state physics (winter semester), each 9 ECTS credits
- Advanced statistical physics (summer term) or advanced quantum mechanics (winter term), each 9 ECTS credits
- Seminar (3 ECTS points)
- Key qualifications (3 ECTS credits)
Elective courses (36 ECTS credits)
The elective courses include courses from all research areas of the faculty. Please note:
- Lab courses can be brought in to the extent of a maximum of 12 ECTS.
- One seminar is mandatory (see above). Additional seminars can be included up to a total of 12 ECTS credits in the elective courses.
- If more than two of the above-mentioned compulsory lectures are taken, the additionally taken compulsory lectures can be included in the elective courses.
